EkoDalam – Exploring Maltese environment

Besides its palaeontological and archaeological importance, the prehistoric site of Għar Dalam in Birżebbuġa is also a Natura 2000 protected area. This Sunday 11th November, Heritage Malta is inviting the public to visit this site and participate in the activities which will focus on various aspects of the Maltese environment. The full day event will also see the involvement of various environmental NGOs and government entities.

Activities will start at 9:00hrs with a botanical tour in the Wied Dalam area led by Nature Trust. This tour will take place again at 11:00hrs, 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs.

At 9:30hrs, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) will deliver a talk about National species. This talk will be repeated at 10:30hrs and at 11:30hrs.

Throughout the day, the GROW 10 TREES Project will be giving demonstrations about tree propagation and at 10:00hrs and 15:30hrs will be planting trees on site.

Various stands on site will provide further opportunity to explore different aspects of our local environment. These include:

  • Heritage Malta – cave fauna;
  • Ambjent Malta – valley management;
  • ERA – National species;
  • Nature Trust – the natural environment;
  • Birdlife – craft sessions and treasure hunts;
  • Golden Island – honey tasting and demonstration. Heritage Malta’s honey products will be on sale.

During this event, participants may choose to take part in environment-related activities, walk around the grounds, and visit Għar Dalam cave. A food stall will also be available.

Visitors will be granted a reduced fee entrance of €2. However, those arriving to Għar Dalam by bicycle will enter for free to encourage environment friendly transport.
