Tours of Tarxien Temples

24 June

To celebrate Jum Hal Tarxien, the Tarxien Local Council in collaboration with Heritage Malta, is organising special tours of the Tarxien Temples.

Tours will focus on the archaeological remains of this site and those activities Heritage Malta is undertaking as part of the Archaeological Heritage Conservation Project, partly funded by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), Cohesion Policy 2007-2013.

Tickets for these tours are available only from the Hal Tarxien Local Council. Tours will commence at 10.00, 11.00, 12.00, 13.00 and 14.00hrs.

Two models will be taking the pose of subjects in paintings from the National Collection – Le Valentin’s Judith and Pacecco de Rosa’s St John the Baptist while well known Maltese artists will be painting on site. Crayons, pencils and Watercolours are fine to use but no oil colours.

At the Gozo Nature Museum there will be a select specimen from the personal collection of Can. G.P. Agius de Soldanis, a pioneer in Maltese linguistics and a renowned historian.

Aligi Sassu (1912 – 2000) – Memories in Paper

A collaboration between Heritage Malta’s National Museum of Fine Arts and the Amici dell’Arte Aligi Sassu. This exhibition will feature 20 works on paper by Sassu. His works are in the Futurist and Primitivist idiom.

Comino Heritage Trail – The Fortifications of the Knights and Natural Landscape

A guided tour of the Knights? fortifications built on Comino to safeguard the coastal waters around Gozo and Malta. A principal curator will explain the ecology of Comino. Arrival at Santa Maria Bay scheduled for 09.30hrs and departure at 16.00hrs. Subject to favourable weather conditions.

Members’ Tour: Temples in an Agricultural Community

22 April

In commemoration of World Heritage Day (21 April), Heritage Malta invites HM members on a morning tour of two of Malta’s world heritage temple sites, Ta’ Hagrat and Skorba. This tour will explore the significance of Mgarr’s cultural heritage from both an archaeological and a local perspective. What is the impact of having World Heritage monuments within a farming community and what role do locals play in preserving these monuments.

During this tour, members will also visit an exhibition in Mgarr and a farm where visitors will get the opportunity to taste local produce. The tour will be led by two HM curators and a local of Mgarr with an intricate knowledge of the temples and their natural setting.

THIS TOUR IS NOW OPEN FOR EVERYONE

Price: Adults: €5. HM Members, Students, and Senior Citizens : €4. Children under the age of 16: Free.

Sunset Tour and Lecture for World Heritage Day

21 April

Heritage Malta is organising a Heritage Trail within Hagar Qim & Mnajdra Archaeological Park. Curators and experts within the field will be discussing the archaeological remains, surrounding landscape and natural features surrounding the temples.

This event will be presenting you the rare opportunity to explore and get to know these sites at their most photogenic time of the day, and to discuss the various questions and points of interest they raise with the persons who have worked in them and have studied them in most detail. Apart from tours of the two main archaeological sites of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples, the tour will also include informative visits to the Misqa Tanks, the Congreve Memorial and the nearby Hamrija Tower.

At the end of the tour a lecture on the site’s prehistory will be held at the Park’s visitor centre.

This Sunset Tour will be held on Saturday the 21st April 2012. Participants are to meet with a Heritage Malta representative in the Visitor Centre lobby at 17:00. Tickets for this event are priced at €7 for adults, while HM members, students, and senior citizens pay only €5. Children under the age of 12 enter for free. Tickets are limited and can be bought from all of Heritage Malta’s sites and museums prior to the event.

Gieh l-Imgarr

5 February – 15 April

Heritage Malta shall participate in this local event with an exhibition at the Mgarr Local Council.

The exhibition consists of six information panels on the archaeological significance of the prehistoric temple sites of Ta` Hagrat and Skorba and other sites which date from later periods, and which contribute to the value that the village of Mgarr has for Malta’s cultural Heritage. The exhibition presents different aspects related to these sites, but focuses mainly on the involvement of the local community and the role it has had, and still has, in managing them.

The exhibition will be open to the public during the official Mgarr Local Council office hours until the 15th April, 2012.

During the Mgarr Strawberry Festival Ta? Hagrat and Skorba Temples will be open to the public. Six tours of 30 persons each, will begin at the following times: 10.00hrs; 11.00hrs; 12.00hrs; 13.00hrs; 14.00hrs; 15.00hrs.

Apothecary at Mdina Medieval

14 and 15 April

As part of the Mdina Medieval Fest, a Medieval apothecary will be demonstrating the process of the distillation of flower water traditionally used in medicinal remedies and in cooking. In the front courtyard of the Museum at the National Museum of Natural History.

Model-Making of a Traditional Boat

5 and 10 April

The Luzzu is one of the Maltese traditional boats which characterise the water surface of our fishing villages. The purpose and significance of its shape and the characteristic paint colours which are used to blend it with the rest of the marine environment will be explained through a hands-on activity divided in 2 sessions of 2 hours each. The activity includes the making of the Luzzu model to scale, using cardboard.

Communicating With or Without Words

4th and 5th April from 10.00hrs till 12.00hrs (at the National Museum of Archaeology, Malta)

14th April from 10.00hrs till 14.00hrs (Museum of Archaeology, Gozo)

Hands-on activity during which participants will be taken through the use of symbolic art, pictograms, and the invention of writing through prehistoric times. The participants will have the opportunity to create their own work of art using shells and bones on clay, to write a message using only pictograms, and decipher a message written in Phoenician alphabet.

Price €5. Culture Card accepted. At the end of the session the participants will be given an attendance certificate.

An Introduction to Nature Photography

3th and 24th March at the National Museum of Natural History, Mdina. Morning session from 10.00 till 12.00 hrs / afternoon session from 13:00 till 15:00 hrs

19th March and 10th April at the Gozo Nature Museum between 10.00 am and 1.00 pm

The course will consist of two theoretical and practical sessions that will introduce the participants to the world of nature photography. Each session will be 2 hours long. During the event the participants will be shown how they can create good images even with compact digital cameras. Additionally, after each session participants will be able to post some of their images on a special site that will be created specifically for them so that they would be able to show their work to the other participants and discuss it with the other participants.

Participants are expected to take a compact digital camera for these sessions.

Recommended for student aged between 10 and 14 years. Price €5.

Culture Card for this event will be accepted.

A play on the Passion of Christ against the unique backdrop of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. The path between Hagar Qim and Mnajdra will be transformed into the streets of Jerusalem and the audience will become part of the crowd witnessing the Passion 2000 years ago. Directed by Alan Fenech.

A dramatization of the Last Supper at the Inquisitor?s Palace focusing on the Jewish rite and symbolism of Easter in Jewish tradition. There will be several performances Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.

The rubberbodies collective present Oracle, a sound-art project that introduces cutting-edge technology and links history with modern day. The project is a collaboration between Lyon?s French sound designer and composer, Aes Dana (Vincent Villuis) and Maltese sound artist Cygna (Mario Sammut).

‘Valletta then and now’ – Heritage Trail

23 March

The tour will commence at Ta’ Liesse church where all participants shall group. The group will then visit the Domus Paulis Museum with Curator Robert Cassar. This museum offers a magnificent view of the Grand Harbour from the terrace. Afterwards, the group will visit the Victoria Gate guided by Vincent Zammit, ITS lecturer.

The tour will then proceed to the National Museum of Fine Arts where participants will have a coffee break followed by a lecture by the Senior Curator Sandro Debono focusing on painting about the Grand Harbour from the permanent collection. Participants will also have the opportunity to view items from the reserve collection connected to the historical city of Valletta.

This tour start at 18.00hrs till 22.00hrs. Tickets available from all Heritage Malta’s sites and museums at €7 for adults and €5 for HM members.

Book Launch: Sites, Artefacts and Landscape: Prehistoric Borg in-Nadur, Malta

Organized by Heritage Malta and the Archaeological Society Malta. This collection of essays, edited by Davide Tanasi and Nicholas C. Vella, discusses the early attempts to understand the site, and presents a comprehensive catalogue of the finds that have never been properly published. Welcome addresses from Chief Curator, Mr Kenneth Gambin, and Patricia Camilleri, Vice-President of the Archaeological Society. A presentation of the book by Prof. Anthony Bonanno, will be followed by a tour of the Bronze Age Rooms by Senior Curator, Sharon Sultana.

31st Annual Scale Model Exhibition

The Society for Scale Modellers – IPMS Malta is organising the 31st Annual Scale Model Exhibition at the Malta Maritime Museum, Vittoriosa, on the 9th, 10th, & 11th of March.

The exhibition will feature detailed scale models of aircarft, marine vessels, armoured vehicles, dioramas and figurines. Models on exhibit are historically researched, painted and built to the minute detail by the society’s members. During the exhibition, demonstrations of the building and finishing process of scale models shall be held.

Dickens and the Maltese Seaman

28 February

Discover the link between Charles Dickens and the heroism of a Maltese seaman. A tour will introduce participants to Victorian Malta. You’ll receive a warm drink of Bovril or Negus before a lecture by Prof. Raymond Agius, ‘The Loss of the Royal Charter: A Link between Dickens and a Maltese Seaman’. Afterwards, the earliest movie adaptation of a Dickens novel, Great Expectations (1912) will be screened. Followed by Victorian era snacks. The Headless Owl

21 & 21 February

Help! Help! The National Museum of Fine Arts is in trouble and needs your help! One of the artefacts found at the museum has mysteriously lost its head! The artefact in question is a vase in the form of an owl … but the owl is now headless. We need your help to get a new head for this owl.

The participants in question will be guided by an artist and will have the opportunity to create a new head for the owl using various media provided. Participants are encouraged to wear their carnival costumes for this activity.

Event for children aged between two and 14. Younger children will need to be accompanied by an adult. This event will be hosted by the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta from 10:00hrs till 13.00hrs. Price €5.

Culture Card for this event will be accepted.

Life at Sea

12 February

Heritage Malta is organising another edition of Life at Sea at the Malta Maritime Museum in Birgu. Exhibits on display will be brought to life with the help of re-enactors, historians, and curators, who will provide fresh insight into Malta’s maritime past.

The museum will be open between 09.00hrs and 17.00hrs. On the day, the museum will organise tours at 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, and 16:30. Admission tickets cost €3, and includes admission to the Inquisitor’s Palace in Birgu. Heritage Malta members and children 16 years and under enter for free.

Tours of San Pawl Milqi

10 February

View the archaeological remains of one of the largest Roman agricultural plants on the Island. Open to the general public on the occasion of the Feast of St Paul between 12.30hrs and 16.30hrs. Guided tours of the site will run every 45 minutes.

Admission prices: 4 Euro for adults, 2 Euro for Seniors and Students, while children 12 years and under enter for free. Free admission to the site to all members of Heritage Malta.

Life in Prehistoric Times

Three hands-on sessions which will include the making of tools from stones and bones, pottery-making, and decorating stones using the bone tools they made in the first session. An introduction to beekeeping and traditional medicinal uses of Honey

4 January

The practice of apiculture requires a sound knowledge of the honey bees’ behaviour. This session shall consist of a presentation by a local beekeeper showing ‘he various stages in the production of honey, equipment used, the role and life of bees and the use of honey, particularly in treating various ailments.’Participants will be given a taste of a traditional drink made with locally produced honey. At the end of the session the participants will be given a certificate of attendance
