Computer modelling of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum environment

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum in Paola is a complex of interconnecting rock-cut chambers set on three distinct levels. Its significant archaeological value has earned it the prestige of being included in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. On Friday, 1st March, Heritage Malta is inviting the general public to attend to a lecture which explains how the environmental data gathered at Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum has been integrated in a 3D model in order to create simulations without doing any real interventions on the archaeological site.

The talk ‘A new age in the conservation of cultural heritage sites: computer modelling of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum environment’ will be presented by Pierre Sandre Farrugia, and it will focus on a recent project that was carried out by the University of Malta in collaboration with Heritage Malta.

The project entailed the creation of a virtual working model of the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum. Environmental data collected from the site within a year was integrated into the model and simulations were carried out, resulting in the recognition of airflow features within the site.

The talk will be carried out in English. Light refreshments will follow.

Lecture starts at: 18:00hrs

Location: Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra Visitor Centre, Qrendi.

Free admission. Seating on a first come, first served basis.
