Festival ta’ Loghob Tradizzjonali Maltin

The third year of this event takes place as part of Birgufest 2011. Crossroads in Cultural Heritage Conservation: Student Conference 2011

A one-day student conference is being held in the Aula Magna, Valletta Campus, St Paul Street, Valletta on 30 September. The aim of the conference is to present the results of recent research in conservation by students who have graduated in the fields of conservation, engineering and science.

The event is being organised by the Department of the Built Heritage (Faculty for the Built Environment), the Department of Metallurgy & Materials Engineering (Faculty of Engineering) and the Department of Chemistry (Faculty of Science), in collaboration with Heritage Malta. Students, professionals, stakeholders and the general public are invited to attend. Registration is free.

Carmelo Agius (1922-2004) ? A Tribute to a Prolific Artisan

1 July – 18 September

Exhibition of clay miniatures of processional statues by Carmelo Agius, a main exponent of the trade. He supplied all the main outlets of the time and his works feature among any serious study of the genre. Miniatures are accompanied by insightful notes, photographs, tools and moulds from his workshop. At the Inquisitor’s Palace, the National Museum of Ethnography. Lore of the Sea

9, 10, 11 September

Lore of the Sea – immemorial waters, is a drop into the contemporary seas of visual-performance and the memories stored in a museum, merging together to create a unique experience of history, art and creativity. This project is a collaboration between rubberbodies collective and Heritage Malta at the Malta Maritime Museum. A project partially funded by the Malta Arts Fund.

After the event, visitors are invited to enjoy a glass of wine with the collective and museum curator on the balcony of the museum which offer superb views of the harbour.

Tickets are available at €12 (€10 for Heritage Malta members) from all Heritage Malta sites and museums.

Sunset Heritage Trail at Hagar Qim Park

10 September

Join Heritage Malta curators on a tour of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra and its surrounding landscape. The tour includes both temples, Misqa Tanks, the Congreve Memorial and Hamrija Tower. Katya Stroud (Senior Curator Prehistoric Sites) and Mario Casha will discuss the archaeological remains while John J. Borg (Principal Curator, National Museum of Natural History) will highlight the natural features surrounding the temples.

Followed by a visual presentation by photographer Daniel Cilia at the Hagar Qim Visitor Center. Cilia has collaborated with Malta’s leading historians in a diverse range of publications, including Malta Before History and Malta: Prehistory and Temples.

The National Museum of Fine Arts and the Museo Civico di Taverna (Calabria) present an exhibition of ten works by Italian artists from Calabria inspired by the works of the great Calabrian artist Mattia Preti and purposely produced for this exhibition. Libretti in the Silent City

Enjoy tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens third classical music recital, in the Courtyard of the Vilhena Palace, Mdina. Accompanying Cliff will be acclaimed pianist Marcelle Zahra, Soprano Seljan Nasibli and a special guest Nicholas McCarthy who is currently the youngest left-hand pianist worldwide.

The programme offers songs and arias such as Verdi’s ‘Parigi O Cara’ from La Traviata, Rossini’s ‘La Danza’, ‘Paraphrase on Miserere’ Op. 16 by Liszt / Pfeiffer and many more.

I Fought the X and the X Won

Organised by artists Dionisis Christofilogiannis and Adrian Scicluna and curated by artist-curator Raphael Vella, this exhibition is inspired by a rock and roll song called “I Fought the Law’ with many cover versions, notably one by the band Bobby Fuller Four in the 1960’s and another by The Clash. The show proposes different situations in which one is faced by antagonistic forces and defeat or failure. Featuring artists from different countries using a wide range of media such as video to drawing, painting and sculpture. This event will be hosted by the National Museum of Fine Arts. Free entrance. The Microbial Deterioration of Maltese Catacombs and Hypogea

A lecture by Conservation scientist Dr Gabriella Zammit, specialist in the microbial deterioration of inorganic substrata. The lecture is based on her PhD research, which involved interdisciplinary work in materials science, chemical analytical techniques, electron microscopy, ecology and molecular biology.
