Itinerarivm Romanvm Serbiae and Archaeological Park VIMINACIUM

Poster Malta 2015National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta

Dr Nemanja Mrđić (Scientific researcher at the Institute of Archaeology, Belgrade) will talk about the cultural route connecting the birth places of the 18 Roman emperors born in Serbia and Viminacium, roman city and legionary fort. The Archaeological park of Viminacium is used as a test site for development of the whole route.

Dr Mrđić will present multidisciplinary research and explain the way archaeologists explore a site that is almost entirely underground.

Viminacium was the capital of the province Moesia Superior (Upper Moesia), one of the most important Roman sites in Serbia. It is much bigger than Pompeii and nowadays, there are no modern settlements over it so the site is suitable for the application of all kinds of non-destructive research methods.

Some other sites will be included in the presentation as a part of an overview of the complete cultural route and project.

At the National Museum of Archaeology, Valletta. The lecture will commence at 19.30hrs.

Corsairs, so called defenders of the faith at sea, were viewed less sympathetically when on land. Swearing, sodomy, and conversion to Islam were among the various misdeeds for which corsairs had to appear before the Inquisitor in the 18th century.

Join Liam Gauci as he shares these fascinating stories which have emerged from the Inquisitorial archives.

The lecture will be delivered in Maltese and starts at 19.00hrs.

This visit will take you back through thousands of years of Maltese history (and prehistory)  and through the results of decades of excavations in one of the most complex archaeological sites you may ever see.
