On Sunday, 3rd November, Heritage Malta is inviting the public to visit St Paul’s and St Augustine’s Catacombs in Rabat during an Open Day where admission will be free of charge.
St Paul’s Catacombs are spread over an underground area of 7,000 square metres and include Christian, Jewish and pagan tombs. A few metres along the street are St Augustine’s Catacombs, with the engraved words Ad Catacumbas surmounting their entrance door.
On this day, visitors will have the opportunity to explore these interesting burial sites and learn about the different types of graves which were hewn into the rocks and about the artefacts and the funerary rites of ancient Punic, Roman and Byzantine times. Visitors can also have a hands-on-experience in a pottery-washing activity, while children can participate in a treasure hunt or in an activity using clay.
