Heritage Malta, together with The Metropolitan Chapter, the University of Malta, the Vatican’s Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, and the Malta Study Centre of Minnesota, will be organising a three-day conference on ‘The Roman Inquisition in Malta and Elsewhere’ between the 18 and 20 September.
During the official launch the Hon Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government Dr Owen Bonnici explained how twenty-eight academics from local and international spheres have confirmed their participation to discuss the Roman Inquisition. Keynote speakers include Mgr Alejandro Cifres Gimenez, Director of the Inquisition Archives at the Vatican, and renowned expert Professor Andrea del Col.
The conference will be accompanied by a temporary exhibition on the Inquisition in Malta which will run till 11 January 2015. Amongst other artefacts this exhibition will include authentic documents from the Vatican Archives, the Cathedral Archives, and the National Library. It will seek to address some popular misconceptions about the Inquisition.
Both conference and exhibition will be hosted at the Inquisitor’s Palace, Vittoriosa, which will be re-opening the upper floor after thirty years, following an intense restoration programme. The space at the Palace open to the public will thus be doubled.
This initiative is partly sponsored by APS Bank.
