Tours of Fort St Elmo

Heritage Malta, in conjunction with the Malta Tourism Authority, is organising guided tours of Fort St Elmo. The aim of Heritage Malta is to increase awareness on the Fort and to open to the public certain areas that are not accessible. Everyone is invited to join and appreciate this glorious Fort, considered as one of the most significant historic landmark in Malta, access to which is however currently restricted.

Heritage Malta is currently a partner with the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation in a project that aims to regenerate and rehabilitate Fort St Elmo from an area which is currently marginalized from the rest of the capital city into a cultural attraction.

From a military point of view, Fort St Elmo was crucial in safeguarding access to the Marsamxett and Grand Harbours. The original Fort was constructed by the Knights in the mid-sixteenth century and while it played a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565, it was also strategically essential during World War II. Today, the Fort is partially utilized by the Police Academy, the office for the Refugees Commission, and Heritage Malta?s National War Museum.

Tickets for these guided tours, including the In Guardia or Allarme event, cost 10 Euro for adults and 8 Euro for Heritage Malta members. Children aged 16 and under enter for free. The tour of the fort, weather permitting, shall commence on scheduled Sundays at 09.30. Tickets can be bought prior to the tour from on site starting from 08.30.
